Advocacy

September 11th, 2009

RISE will advocate on their behalf to improve government refugee policy and generate social change. RISE runs projects that benefit the welfare of refugees, survivors of war and ex-detainees in Australia.

RISE will advocate on behalf of refugees, asylum seekers and ex-detainees to influence and improve government refugee policies. Many asylum-seekers have fled their countries due to political unrest, terror, persecution, violence, or war. They arrive in Australia in search of freedom, safety and a peaceful life. The experience of settling in Australia very often causes further trauma. This is especially relevant in relation to the blanket policy of mandatory detention of unauthorized arrivals to Australia.

RISE is opposed to the Australian Government’s policy on mandatory detention and will work to encourage alternatives for managing Australia’s borders with a view to upholding the fundamental human rights of asylum seekers.

RISE differs from all other social and community welfare organizations in that it is managed by people with direct experience as refugees arriving in Australia. We pride ourselves on our deep understanding of multiculturalism, our diverse cultural knowledge, our communication skills, our sensitivity to and appreciation of difference, and our acceptance of religious identities. RISE will make a real difference in the lives of newly arrived refugees, settled refugees, asylum seekers and ex-detainees, helping them to secure a safe and sustainable future in the Australian community.
